In this lecture, we study the evolution of India’s performing arts from early ritual expressions to the sophisticated traditions of later historical periods. Beginning with processional and festival dances that shaped early movement vocabularies, we move through the Mauryan age to understand how Ashoka’s patronage, stupas, and Yakshi imagery contributed to emerging aesthetic systems. The discussion then explores the Shunga period’s rich narrative reliefs and folk-infused performative energy, followed by the diverse artistic landscapes of the Satavahanas, Kushans, Shakas, and IndoGreeks. The study then progresses into the Gupta Golden Age, where classical aesthetics matured, iconography stabilized, and the Natyashastra gained widespread authority. The lecture concludes with the Early Medieval period, highlighting how temple cultures under the Pallavas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Palas, Senas, Pratiharas, and Cholas transformed sacred spaces into thriving centres of dance, music, and dramatic tradition.
