You’d been fighting a war to protect mortals for thousands of years. You’d done all you could. You’d fallen from the heavens down to mortal earth out of pure exhaustion.
When you arrived in the mortal realm, you assumed you’d be trying to return to the heavens as soon as possible. But much to your surprise, when humans found you, they did not attempt to hurt you. They invited you kindly to their King’s palace.
“What do I have you lose?” You thought, and followed them with tired eyes and dragging feet.
It wasn’t a long journey to the castle. Indeed, the King left the safety of his castle to meet you along the way
He and all his men watched you with awe in their eyes, but you were used to such a thing. You were a god after all.
“Welcome to our realm,” the king said, bowing low before you. His followers followed suit while you watched him, not possessing enough energy to care about the gesture.
“Are you the one who has been protecting us for many years?” The king asked.
You nodded.
You didn’t know why you cared so much for the humans, but you did.
“Thank you. Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover our gratitude,” the king started.
“I don’t want any sacrifices,” You quickly interrupted. In your thousands of years, you’d noticed that humans were quick to burn other humans at the stake if they thought the gods wanted it.
“No, no, of course not,” the king said with a chuckle, as if he thought his civilization was above such things. You raised an eyebrow, knowing that wasn’t true. Even if they weren’t burning people, humans were still humans. There were atrocities happening. But you were happy they weren’t happening in your name.
“Are you here for any purpose?” The king asked.
You shook your head.
“I simply did not have the strength to remain in the heavens,” You said simply.
The king nodded.
“We’ve heard tales of such a thing happening before.”
Again, you raised your eyebrow. You hadn’t talked with another god in hundreds of years. You hadn’t thought about them feeling as exhausted as you.
“If I may, we’ve created a castle at the cliffs on the edge of the sea. All the staff and buildings there, libraries and spas, were made for gods to rest and recover from the wars they fight on our behalf. Would you be interested in taking a vacation?”
You were shocked and skeptical.
You demanded, “What do you mortals want of me in return?”
“We want our allies to be strong in their defense of mankind,” the king explained. “You need to rest in order to keep fighting for us.”
That was true. That made sense.
“I could leave at any time?” You questioned.
The king nodded.
“Of course! We can not match your power. And why would we try? What good would you be to us captured and powerless? We need you in the heavens as our last line of defense.”
You stared at him, waiting for further explanation. He met your eyes for the first time.
“You’ve protected us for so long. Let us return the favor for just a little while. What are a couple weeks, even months, compared to your eternity? Let us do this for you.”
You were tired. You needed rest. A couple months in a castle overlooking the sea, with the fresh mortal air, libraries of mortal books, spas to restore your health, servants to tend to your every need, room to rest and recover? It sounded like heaven away from heaven.
“Yes,” You said, making your decision.
The King smiled broadly, a welcoming twinkle in his eyes.
“We have a carriage waiting,” the king said.
You stared deeply into his eyes, retrieving the location of such a place from his memory.
“Thank you, but I’ll travel myself.”
“Alright,” the king nodded. “Thank you for the honor of your presence, and for everything you’ve done for us.”
You nodded in return, and closed your fist to teleport.
In a split second, the king and his minions were gone, replaced by the vast view of the oceans beyond dark green cliffs. The castle itself was a comforting moldy gray, with towers that looked almost as old as you. You took a deep breath, retrieving the memories of visitors before you. No other gods had yet been to the castle. It was just you.
It was time to rest.
You took another breath and walked up to the large front doors.
