WATCH: Rep. Jeffries says impeachment trial without witnesses would be 'stunning departure'

During the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump on Jan. 21, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., argued that not calling witnesses would be a "stunning departure" from Senate history. Jeffries said the president shouldn't be held to a standard that's different from long-standing Senate rules over impeachment. Jeffries said the official record doesn't include testimonies from certain potential witnesses who were "in the loop," such as acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney. A trial cannot be complete without Mulvaney's testimony and others, he said. Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December on two articles — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Senate will now decide whether to convict Trump of those charges and remove him from office, or acquit him.
