Sven Mikser: NATO Must Match Its Words with Action and Keep Ukraine at the Core

Estonian MEP Sven Mikser (S&D) delivered a focused and strategic message ahead of the NATO Summit, urging member states to not only agree on increased defence spending but to ensure its actual implementation. Reflecting on the 2014 Wales Summit pledge—which many states failed to meet—he warned against empty promises and called for consistency between NATO and EU actions. Mikser stressed that no summit outcome would be credible without a firm and increased commitment to supporting Ukraine, describing it as the defining security crisis of our time. Lastly, he emphasized that NATO must remain a values-based alliance rooted in collective democratic defence, not a transactional platform where security is bought and sold.
