In 2021, the dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests began an innovative artistic process that will result in the continuous production of both digital and live formats. Terry Riley’s »In C« (1964) forms the musical foundation of this, an open composition that was revolutionary at the time and is generally considered the first piece of minimalist music. Based on this milestone of music history, Sasha Waltz and her dancers develop choreographic material that follows a similarly variable structure and is deliberately designed not to be a finished stage piece.

In 2001, »Bang on a Can« released a highly acclaimed recording of their interpretation of the minimalist classic »In C« with a singular combination of amplified instruments from around the globe on Cantaloupe Music.

On March 6th 2021 »In C« by Sasha Waltz & Guests received its digital premiere on a livestream from the radialsystem in Berlin to the sounds of the recording by »Bang on a Can«.

»In C« is an experimental, constantly evolving process that once again reconceives and refines Sasha Waltz & Guests’ long-standing approach as well as the dialogue between dance, music and space, both digitally and in real life. At the same time, it explores the potential of flexible artistic production in times of pandemic and of artistic exchange, even across national borders. The individual movement phrases f.e. have also been recorded as video tutorials, which allow dancers to learn the choreographic material digitally and remotely.

Die Tanzcompagnie Sasha Waltz & Guests begann im Jahr 2021 einen neuartigen künstlerischen Prozess, aus dem kontinuierlich sowohl digitale wie live-Formate hervorgehen. Musikalische Grundlage ist Terry Rileys »In C« (1964), eine in seiner Zeit revolutionäre, offene Komposition, die gemeinhin als erstes Werk der Minimal Music gilt. Basierend auf diesem Meilenstein der Musikgeschichte entwickelte Sasha Waltz gemeinsam mit ihren Tänzer*innen choreographisches Material, das einer ähnlich variablen Struktur folgt und bewusst nicht als fertiges Bühnenstück angelegt ist.

2001 veröffentlichte das legendäre New Yorker Musiker-Kollektiv »Bang on a Can« eine vielbeachtete Aufzeichnung ihrer Interpretation von Terry Rileys »In C«. Dafür nutzten sie eine außergewöhnliche Kombination von verstärkten Instrumenten aus der ganzen Welt.

»In C« von Sasha Waltz & Guests wurde am 6. März 2021 im Livestream aus dem radialsystem in Berlin zu den Klängen der Aufzeichnung von »Bang on a Can« uraufgeführt.

»In C« ist ein experimenteller, sich konstant entwickelnder Prozess, der den langjährig ausgearbeiteten Arbeitsansatz von Sasha Waltz & Guests und den Dialog von Tanz, Musik und Raum digital wie analog noch einmal weiterdenkt. Zugleich werden Möglichkeiten der flexiblen künstlerischen Produktion in Zeiten der Pandemie und des künstlerischen Austauschs auch über Landesgrenzen hinweg ausgelotet. So sind die einzelnen Bewegungs-Figuren z.B. in Video-Tutorials festgehalten, die das Erlernen des choreographischen Materials durch Tänzer*innen, die nicht vor Ort sind, auch digital ermöglichen.
