Why do earthquakes happen?

The largest earthquake ever recorded was the 1960 Valdivia earthquake in Chile, which had a magnitude of 9.5 on the Richter scale.
While earthquakes are a natural occurrence, they can be very dangerous, particularly in areas where buildings and infrastructure are not designed to withstand the shaking. In order to reduce the risk of damage and injury from earthquakes, scientists and engineers work to better understand the underlying causes and develop strategies for building stronger structures and improving emergency response protocols.
