1935년에 발표된 노래로 민요풍의 가락과 구슬픈 곡조가 잘 살아있어 목포를 대표하는 노래로이자 전라도를 대표하는 노래로 남아있다.

지금도 매년 목포에서는 '이난영 가요제'를 열고 있다.

망국의 한을 표현하는 노래로, 이를 보여주는 '삼백년 원한 품은 노적봉 밑에 '라는 가사가 조선총독부의 검열에 걸리자 '삼백련 원안풍은'으로 바꿔서발음이 비슷하게 들리도록 바꾼 일화가 있다.

As a song that expresses the resentment of the country, there is an anecdote that the lyrics "Under Nojeokbong, a 300-year-old grudge " were censored by the Japanese Government-General of Korea, and the pronunciation was changed to "Three Hundred Years of Wonjangpungeun" to sound similar.
