Greetings, and welcome to the world of Officine Panerai. Today I'll be your guide to the Panerai Luminor 1950 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic PAM 654. This 44mm, stainless-steel timepiece begins with an oversized and classical fully-brushed Panerai steel pin buckle. It allows for easy on-the-fly adjustments, and preserves the historical aesthetic of the watch, inspired by the great Panerai amphibious warfare watches of the 1930s, '40s, '50s, and '60s.

The Ponte Vecchio strap is a deep and rich brownish red, almost like Georgia clay with a gorgeous Patina-style stitch evocative of the aged Panerai combat watches from the mid-century period, but at the same time, with modern fit, finish, and specifications. You can see this is not an aged strap, but brand new and supple, with inlaid calfskin and a contrasting underlay.

Now the watch is 100-meter water resistant, thanks and that screwed-in case back, but also thanks and the iconic device protecting the crown, crescent shaped with a locking lever. Draw it up, and far easier to actuate. I could not do this with a traditional screw-down crown. It's practical, because you can use it when your hands are gloved or wet or sweaty, appropriate to a sports watch. First patented in 1956, it remains a Panerai exclusive. Simply raise the lever, and now you can access all of the winding and setting functions of the crown. Lock the lever down, and now it's secured down to the watch's maximum rated water resistance of 100 meters.

On the underside once more, you can see Panerai's deluxe, strap-release system. Push the dimple corrector on the underside, and then using the included boxed tools, while the dimple is depressed, force the bar retaining the strap through the opposite side for easy removal without risking your skill with a screwdriver against the finish of your lugs.

The 44mm stainless steel case is Panerai's 1950. True to history, it features both strong, masculine character lines and sensuous, compound curves.

The dial is classically inspired, but quite modern in its functionality. You can see the watch is a chronograph. Starting it, we use the left-handed pushers. When you think about it, far more practical than the 3:00 side, because you can easily recruit your opposable thumb into action to start, to stop, and to reset the chronograph. Now this makes it easier to use on the fly, but the chronograph has other functions.

The way you use the chronograph in conjunction with the tachymeter rayhaught is to actually follow that golden minute hand, and relative to the scale along the rayhaught, a boat moving over a fixed nautical mile, one nautical mile being the base, you stop the chronograph when the boat finished the nautical mile, and wherever that golden minute hand is pointing on the calibrations of the tachymeter scale, that's how many nautical miles per hour the boat is moving, so it can be used for timing a boat over a course, but can also be used in flyback capacity to rapidly reset and restart.

Now inside, enabling this functionality, is a Panerai-manufacture, automatic caliber, 90-100 chronograph movement. Three-day power reserve, automatic winding, it features a robust free-sprung architecture for resistance to shock-induced timing deviation, again, protected again to 100 meters, appropriate for just about all aquatic activities short of professional diving. It has additional refinements, including a zero-reset function, so when you unlock the crown lever, and you pull the crown all the way out, you actually stop the seconds, but you also reset the seconds hand at 9:00 to 60, and you fix it there, allowing you to precisely set the watch against a reference time.

One detent out from flush to the case, you activate the time-zone function, such that you can jump the hour hand, independent of seconds on minutes, forward on backwards as you travel east or west through different time zones. Of course the dial, featuring the classic Panerai pattern, is fully luminescent.

Now the watch features the refinements of both a column wheel and a vertical clutch internally. What this means is that the movement features a column wheel, which is crisp to actuate. You can hear it. You can feel it. It's a tactile pleasure. Then there's also the vertical clutch, which allows the seconds hand, you'll note, to start without the jump conventionally seen on a lateral yoke style. Due to the vertical clutch architecture, you can run the chronograph continuously, without any additional wear and tear to the watch. This is excellent for those who prefer to look to the center of their watch, not a subregister to read seconds off on a larger scale. Just leave it running. It's as though you have center seconds.
