Adam MacDonald reacts after Brighton & Hove Albion made it back-to-back Premier League clean sheets, with a disciplined 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton side were the better team for long spells but couldn’t find the goal their performance merited, despite creating several good openings.

Albion named an unchanged starting XI for the first time this Premier League season, with Bart Verbruggen again impressing between the sticks. The Dutch goalkeeper produced a superb one-handed save to deny Ismaila Sarr in the first half and another crucial stop from Yeremy Pino in stoppage time to secure a deserved point. In front of him, Lewis Dunk and Jan Paul van Hecke were solid and composed, dealing confidently with Palace’s long throws and crosses. Full-backs Mats Wieffer and Ferdi Kadioglu offered width and energy, the latter in particular catching the eye with his surging runs down the left.

In midfield, Carlos Baleba had a mixed afternoon - guilty of one costly turnover but working hard to recover possession - while Yasin Ayari continued his tidy, intelligent form, making key interceptions and a vital block in the closing stages. Wieffer, who moved between midfield and defence, was outstanding, controlling the rhythm of Brighton’s play and showing why Hurzeler trusts him as the pivot in this evolving Brighton system.

Further forward, Yankuba Minteh, Diego Gomez and Georginio Rutter showed flashes of the attacking football that was so effective last weekend against Leeds United. Minteh missed a big first-half chance after good work from Gomez, while Rutter saw a second-half penalty overturned by VAR following minimal contact with Jaydee Canvot - a moment that summed up Brighton’s frustration in front of goal.

Up top, Danny Welbeck led the line, pressing Palace’s backline and linking play effectively. Late changes saw Joel Veltman, Charalampos Kostoulas, Maxim De Cuyper and Stefanos Tzimas introduced as Brighton searched for a winner, but the final touch eluded them.

For Hurzeler and Brighton & Hove Albion, this was another step forward - a solid away performance, another Premier League clean sheet. With the international break next, the Albion will be looking to continue their good form in two weeks time as they host Brentford at The AMEX.
