More than 3,000 migrants lost their lives in 2025 while attempting to reach Spain by sea, according to a new report released by the Spanish migration rights organization Caminando Fronteras.

The figures, compiled by the group from interviews with families of migrants and official data, highlight ongoing dangers faced by people fleeing war, poverty, and instability in hopes of reaching European shores.

According to the report, approximately 3,090 people — including 192 women and 437 children — died between January and mid-December 2025 while attempting the treacherous journey across the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. This number represents a sharp decline from 2024, when more than 10,000 deaths or disappearances were recorded on similar routes.

Despite the overall reduction in fatalities, the report warns that migration remains perilous. Many deaths occurred on the Atlantic migration route from West Africa to the Canary Islands, one of the world’s most dangerous irregular migration paths. Other fatalities were recorded on Mediterranean routes, including crossings from Algeria toward the Balearic Islands.

Caminando Fronteras attributes the lower death toll partly to tighter border controls and increased patrols, but says these measures have also forced migrants to take longer, more hazardous paths. The group also documented the emergence of new, riskier journeys departing from areas such as Guinea, illustrating how smugglers adapt to enforcement pressure by steering people into even more dangerous waters.

Spanish authorities reported that 35,935 irregular migrants reached Spain by sea and land up to December 15, a 40 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2024. However, rights groups stress that this drop does not necessarily indicate safer conditions for those attempting the crossing.

Humanitarian organizations and campaigners continue to call for expanded search and rescue operations, safer legal routes for asylum seekers, and stronger international cooperation to address the root causes of forced migration and prevent further loss of life at sea.
