Ford unveiled its all-new 2020 Ford Explorer at a special reveal event a week before the 2019 Detroit Auto Show.

The redesigned 2020 Ford Explorer offers more performance, utility and features than last year's model. These improvements are more than enough to bring current Explorer owners back to their local Ford dealer. At the same time, the Explorer offers more configurations and powertrains than others in the class, giving shoppers more of an opportunity to tailor their SUV to their liking. Pricing will be announced this spring, with 2020 Explorers arriving at dealers beginning in June.

Most Explorers will be powered by a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, an increase of 20 hp compared to a 2019 model with the same engine. If you need more power, the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 should do the trick. Ford says it will make around 365 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 30 lb-ft versus the previous turbo 3.5-liter motor. The power bumps — along with the switch to a new rear-wheel-drive platform — give the Explorer a higher tow rating than before. The four-cylinder with the Class III Trailer Tow package can now pull 5,300 pounds (compared to 3,000 pounds), while the V6 can tow 5,600 pounds (last year's similar engine maxed out at 5,000 pounds).

A smattering of electronic driving assistance systems round out the tech features. Every Explorer comes with Ford's Co-Pilot360 suite of safety features. These include a rearview camera with a lens cleaner, automatic high-beam control, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic front emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning and mitigation. Optional safety systems, depending on trim, include a cruise control system that adapts to the posted speed limit, automatic rear emergency braking and a feature that applies the brakes after a collision to prevent a secondary crash. A new version of Ford's Active Park Assist steers the Explorer into a perpendicular or parallel parking spot without needing the driver to touch the wheel, shifter, or gas or brake pedals.
