Established by the French in 1720 as Le Poste Des Opelousas, Louisiana's third oldest city was initially a military station and trading post. In the fall of 1868, it was the site of one of the deadliest reconstruction-era massacres.

The parish seat of St. Landry Parish, it's just north of Lafayette, near Sunset, Grand Coteau, Eunice, Port Barre, LeBeau, and Ville Platte. The current population is 15,786 (2020).

Opelousas is home to the annual Louisiana "BBQ Festival" and "Southwest Zydeco Music Festival." When visiting or just passing through, please support local small businesses!

As with many areas in Louisiana, Opelousas is also home to a rising number of violent crimes, including murder, that will shortly be highlighted on this channel.
