Its main functions include:
1. *Forming a "vault" support structure in advance* to prevent collapse above the tunnel;
2. *Controlling surface settlement and tunnel deformation* to improve construction safety;
3. *Improving the geological conditions of the face* to provide a stable environment for subsequent excavation.
During construction, steel pipes (or micro pipes) are usually driven in by drilling rigs and cement slurry is injected for reinforcement, often in conjunction with the "step method" and "New Austrian Tunneling Method".
