Jeremy Deller on the genius of artist Mike Nelson| Hayward Gallery

Jeremy Deller, the conceptual, video and installation artist introduces us to the Hayward Gallery exhibition, Mike Nelson: Extinction Beckons. Deller begins by explaining how he came to know Nelson, and his and how the two artists’ paths regularly crossed before they had truly met one another.

Deller goes on to look at the similarities between their two practices and approaches, particularly in how they each look to find stories and give new life to objects other people have thrown away. And he explains how the industrial objects and artefacts redeployed within Nelson’s work have the effect of memorialising a period of working class life and culture.
