💡 One of Belgium's highlights when it comes to nature, is the high plateau that stretches north of Malmédy up as far as Eupen. It is known as the Hautes Fagnes (in German, the Hohes Venn or High Fens) and is now protected as a national park. This area marks the end of the Ardennes proper and has been twinned with the Eifel hills to form the sprawling Deutsch-Belgischer Naturpark. The Hautes Fagnes accommodates Belgium’s highest peak, the Signal de Botrange (694m), but the rest of the area is boggy heath and woods, windswept and rather wild – excellent hiking country, though often fearsome in winter.

Just across the German border is the little charming town of Monschau, where we stayed for camping. Monschau is a very small but popular resort village in the Eifel region in Germany. The village attracts loads of casual tourists visiting the Eifel National Park. The village is famous for its well-preserved historic half-timber houses, which are typical of the region. Most of the little streets look like they could double as fairy tale movies sets. It might get busy but it shouldn't prevent you going there.

🎫 The High Fens can be reached all year round and is worth a visit in every season. You can find many trails to follow on respective hiking apps. The region is definitely one of the best for hiking in Belgium.

😍 This video is part of my series 'Discover Belgium'. Belgium is a small western European country with lots of things to offer. These videos are an answer to the question what to visit in Belgium.
