Direct Conversion Receiver Using the CA3028 Single Balanced Mixer Product Detector

A short description of what a direct conversion or DC receiver means, its working principle, advantages, disadvantages and the applications. This DC receiver is wired around the CA3028 singly balanced differential mixer configuration. Here the output from the variable frequency oscillator and RF input are mixed together using the above mentioned singly balanced mixer to get the baseband audio signal. The frequency of the VFO and the received radio frequency input are the same, therefore it is called homodyne receiver, synchrodyne receiver or zero IF receiver. It can demodulate CW, SSB and digital pulse signals well, but it cannot demodulate AM or FM signals. AM and FM can be demodulated using synchronous detection techniques. It is now widely used in software defined radios, mobile communications and avionics.
