The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQB aims to bring the automaker's trademark luxury and refinement to the electric vehicle segment. Starting at $53,900, this compact EV SUV offers a familiar yet futuristic take on Mercedes' design ethos. We spent some time with the new EQB to see if it lives up to expectations.

Visually, the EQB blends elements of the gas-powered GLB-Class with styling cues from the brand's EQ electric sub-brand. The grille is sealed and the headlights have been reworked with EQ-specific LED accents. Mercedes added some sharper lines to the rear, but overall the aesthetics are evolutionary. The EQB looks like a Mercedes inside and out.

Three variants will be offered at launch: the 188 hp EQB250+ with front-wheel drive, the 225 hp EQB300, and the performance-oriented 288 hp EQB350 4MATIC. The EQB300 and EQB350 come standard with all-wheel drive to take advantage of their extra power. This range gives buyers options between basic transportation needs and something with some verve, much like what Mercedes offers with its gas models.

The interior design draws heavily from other next-gen Mercedes models with its large seamless screens and updated steering wheel. Material quality gives an upscale vibe, but the third row is pretty cramped - that's better utilized for extra cargo room. Interior space is generous in rows one and two though, even with the battery pack intrusion, and we had no complaints after hours behind the wheel.

Out on the road the EQB delivers a quiet and comfortable ride. The extra weight of the battery pack (up to 700 pounds) gives it stability that belies its boxy shape. Wind noise is minimal and the cabin isolation makes even highway slogs peaceful. Dial up the power and the EQB300 and 350 accelerate with authority - an unexpected thrill in an otherwise sedate package.

Range estimates sit between 227 and 245 miles depending on trim. Recharging from 10-80% on fast DC chargers takes around 31 minutes. For comparison, the gas GLB250 is EPA rated at 26 mpg combined. Depending on your driving, going electric could save a nice chunk of gas money. Figures for the EQB300 and 350 land in the mid to upper 90s MPGe, very good for the luxury EV class.

Standard safety now includes automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot assist, and lane keeping assist. Move up the range and you can add extras like surround view cameras and parking assist - advanced but expected for the Mercedes badge. Warranty coverage aligns with convention too: 4 years/50,000 miles overall and 8 years/100k miles on EV components.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQB toes a nice line between radical and familiar. It keeps much of what Mercedes does right with its gas vehicles in terms of luxury, quality, and road manners, while benefiting from the torque and refinement of electric drive. Starting under $55k, this handsome compact SUV makes a compelling case versus rivals from Audi, BMW and Volvo. The EQB's blend of eco-cred and Mercedes cachet should play well with the brand's loyal buyers.
