At Gough’s Cave in Cheddar Gorge, England, archaeologists uncovered human remains dating to around 14,700 years ago, revealing some of the clearest evidence of prehistoric cannibalism. Bones from at least five individuals, including children and adolescents, show cut marks, percussion damage, and human tooth marks, indicating careful removal of flesh and extraction of marrow. Remarkably, several skulls were modified into cups, suggesting these practices may have had ritual or symbolic significance. Some bones even display engraved patterns, hinting at complex cultural behaviour rather than purely survival-driven cannibalism. These findings provide a rare glimpse into the lives, death rituals, and social practices of Upper Paleolithic humans, shedding light on how our ancestors approached mortality, grief, and community traditions.
