TD5 Discovery 2 xyz gear position switch fault code P0705 video 1 of 2

Описание к видео TD5 Discovery 2 xyz gear position switch fault code P0705 video 1 of 2

If you own a Land Rover fitted with a 5 Cylinder Diesel TD5 Engine you may have already had an experience with the issue of the M&S green flashing lights coming on and that is what brought you to this video today, well help is at hand.

Looking at all the posts on the web, its seems the TD5 Engine fitted to Discovery & Defender between 1999 and 2006 has a history of oil travelling down the Engine Loom into the ECU via the red plug, and this is just one thing we are looking at in this video as a possible cause of the green m&s flashing green lights coming on. Its very easy to do a check, and I will show you how I did it for the first time myself.

The symptoms of the xyz switch failing and oil in the loom failing give the same indicators.
The M & S green warning lamps flash, you may possibly get hard starting which I did not get, poor performance and the TD5 running rough, limp home mode, slow pulling away from a roundabout are just a few things to look for.

Generally this fault can be quickly checked by removing the red ECU Plug and looking for Oil contamination." This is one easy and quick test and shown in this video.

In a recent post, Allan Davidson from Allfourx4 indicated that the another reason for these problems is that the yellow and white CAN twisted wires on the engine ECU aren't providing the correct (or any) signal to the electronic Automatic Transmission (EAT) ECU, is due to the oil corrupting the signal in the red plug.

Symptoms:
If the engine is running rough and the M&S lights are on, check the red male ECU harness multi pin connector for oil.
Also check the female ECU connector on the alloy box for oil. If contamination is present, then this is one likely cause of the M&S lights. The Hawkeye code reader from Bearmach which I use, may show injector faults,. due to the oil ingress.
The auto box goes into limp home mode, you are unable to go through reverse without M&S lights coming on.

Solution 1 of 3 in this series of videos.
Short term - Deoil the ECU end of the wiring harness (use degreaser, electrical spray contact cleaner, then air dry etc.)
Replace the injector harness (some people posting on the AULRO web pages indicated that it should be considered a service item).
Consider replacing the engine harness every 10 years or before a long trip or take a spare with you. (UK £35 Bearmach)

Use dielectric grease on the connectors.
When the Discovery 2 TD5 engine has a fault with the M&S green lights flashing, the code Fault 14 P0705 position switch monitoring permanent or Fault 14 intermittent comes up on the Hawkeye reader I am using, this would point to the xyz gear selector switch circuit not allowing the signal pulse to get to the ECU from the xyz switch.

Its been well documented that the grey plug connector of the XYZ gear position switch and the xyz switch body itself, both get water inside them and they both go rusty as you will see in my other videos you can clearly see the problem on the 2004 model. The short rubber air con pipe tip discharges water from above this switch and connector and the general opinion on most posts is that this causes the issue of intermittent signals to the ECU red plug in the engine compartment next to the jack and battery.

Thanks to All Four x 4 for their advice and posts on this cause.
