The Income Tax raids on Congress MP Dhiraj Sahu's premises in Jharkhand and Odisha have led to the seizure of Rs 353 crore and approximately 3 kg of gold ornaments. The cash haul is the highest ever in a single operation by any probe agency in the country. But what happens to the cash recovered in such cases? Let's have a look

The seized money is deposited into an account handled by the Income Tax department. In this case, the money has been deposited in Odisha’s State Bank of India in the IT Department’s account, also known as the Provision Deposit (PD) account.

The IT Department investigates and submits a report in 60 days thereafter it allows the accused to explain their income sources. If agreed, the case closes at this stage itself. if not, appeals can be made to the Income Tax Commissioner, Appellate Tribunal, high courts, and Supreme Court. This 18-month process assesses evidence and income proof to determine the legality of recovered cash
