Ransomware threat data from 2022 is beginning to surface and we are getting a clearer picture of what we can expect in 2023.
Ransomware attacks have increased and new ransomware variants have proliferated. This is likely attributed to the success of the Ransomware-as-a-Service model (RaaS).

Sophos 2022 State of Ransomware report finds that 2/3 of organizations suffered a ransomware attack in 2021, an incredible 78% increase on the previous year. Malicious actors were also more successful at encrypting data, with a 65% rate of encryption success compared to 54% in the same timeframe.* Meanwhile, according to Fortinet’s 2022 Global Threat Landscape Report, ransomware variants have doubled in a six-month period. The documented variants went from 5,400 in the second half of 2021 to 10,666 in the first half of 2022.**

The good news is that despite the increase in number of variants and malicious actors, the blueprint for cyber-attacks has largely remained the same. Organizations now have a variety of solutions available to combat the threat of ransomware. However, improving your organization’s cybersecurity posture is a must.
