As the original raw image was rather cold my goal for this photo was to make it a lot warmer and make it seem like it was shot during sunset with very bright, golden light. As it was shot inside a forest where there was a big difference between the darkest and brightest light, I also had to shoot a bracketed sequence which I combined to an HDR image to prevent heavy under- or overexposure. The basic raw adjustments were done in Lightroom, while I used Photoshop to add some heavier effects.

1. Basic Adjustments
I started by merging the HDR image in Lightroom, then activating the Lens corrections and changing the camera profile to Adobe Standard which helps making the darkest parts a little brighter. As I wanted the photo to be warmer, I increased the white balance temperature and to brighten everything up I increased the exposure. Of course, this results in overexposure, so I dropped the highlights slightly. For some more saturation the vibrance was increased.

2. Local Adjustments
First, I had to fix the overexposed sky part. Here I added a radial filter and simply dropped the highlights. As I wanted to have a nice glow effect over the sky, I also increased the blacks carefully. Then, I added a graduated filter over the upper part in which I added contrast and increased the shadows.

3. Colour grading
There’s very little colour grading involved: I simply dropped the green and yellow hues to reduce the green tones in the image. Then played around in the calibration tab (all the way down in the lightroom developing menu) with the RGB hue sliders until I was satisfied.

4. Photoshop
First, I wanted to make the sky warmer, so I added an overlay layer and used an orange brush to paint in sunset colours over the sky. To add a heavier glow effect, I added a softlight and a hard-light layer and on each of those carefully painted over with a warm brush to add glow. Finally, I used the nik collection plug in to add more warmth (brilliance / warmth filter) and a dreamy look (soft focus filter)
