📍 Location: The Sacred Peaks of Shaanxi
Mount Huashan (华山) is located near Huayin City, about 120 km (75 miles) east of Xi'an in the Shaanxi Province of China. It is one of the "Five Great Mountains" of China and is famous for its five distinct peaks that resemble a lotus flower.


The Vast Sky Plank Walk itself is tucked away on the eastern face of the South Peak (Landing Wild Geese Peak), which is the highest point of the mountain at 2,154.9 meters above sea level.

📜 A 700-Year-Old History
The path wasn't built for tourists; it was built for solitude.

The Founder: It was originally constructed over 700 years ago during the Yuan Dynasty by a Taoist priest named He Zhizhen.

The Purpose: He sought a place of absolute quiet to practice Taoism and cultivate his morality, away from the distractions of the world.

The Construction: Using only stone nails driven into the cliffside and simple wooden rafters, he carved out a path that seems to defy gravity. Today’s path is a reinforced version of his original vision.

🧗 What Makes This Hike Famous?
The "Plank Walk" isn't just a stroll—it's a multi-stage test of nerves:

The "Three Sections": The walk begins at the South Heavenly Gate. It starts with a relatively safe fenced path, moves into a terrifying vertical descent down an iron ladder, and culminates in the famous wooden planks bolted directly into the vertical cliff face.

12-Inch Width: The planks are only about 0.3 meters (1 foot) wide. In some sections, there are no planks at all—only stone footholds carved into the rock.


The "Dead End" Challenge: Unlike most trails, this is a dead end. Once you reach the small Taoist shrine at the end, you have to turn around and walk back, meaning you must squeeze past other hikers coming from the opposite direction on the same narrow boards!


Safety First (Mostly): While rumors of a high death toll are largely unverified internet legends, the mountain authorities now require all hikers to wear a safety harness and remain clipped into the iron chains at all times.
