The first video of the Eight Tones Online Guzheng Recital Series, our world-renowned Guzheng Teacher - Zhang Lu Fen, accompanied on the piano by Chiang Howe Ern, Daniel, perform the piece "Chuo" (Sorrowful Yearning), a classic Shaanxi folk music piece with influences from the ancient tunes of the Xiqin. Zhang Lu Fen currently teaches at our Eight Tones Music School and she graduated from the Xi'an Conservatory of Music majoring in Guzheng performance, and is currently an honorary committee member of the Shaanxi Chinese Music Association, as well as the Vice President of the Singapore Guzheng Association. Zhang Lu Fen was awarded the “Best Performance Award” for her performance during the Shaanxi Province Chamber Music Competition.

Write-up Of The Piece:
Written in 2009 by Pipa Maestro and composer Qu Wenjun, "Chuo" (Sorrowful Yearning) is a classic Shaanxi folk music piece with influences from the ancient tunes of the Xiqin. On the right hand, the musician creates a powerful outburst of colours by using the successive tuopi technique (a continuous flicking of the thumb back and forth across the strings), in order to deliver the melodic lines in a direct and unadorned manner. The music is counterbalanced by the left-hand techniques, as the musician bends, kneads, slides, and vibrates the string to evoke a tender and gentler tone.

This virtuosic concerto that is performed on the Guzheng and the piano, fully encapsulates the soft yet expressive, exhilarating yet heart-wrenching nature of Shaanxi music. Through the array of conflicted emotions, the composer laments the poignant yearning of a bygone past - an ode to the ancient city of Chang’an (situated in Shaanxi province), which was once the capital of 13 Chinese dynasties and a prosperous hub for culture and the arts.

"惙"此曲由曲文军创作于2009年。乐曲采用了西秦古调之音韵创作而成，为典型的陕西地方风格音乐。此曲在演奏技巧上，右手大量运用"托劈"技法，使得音乐色彩铿锵有力，质朴粗犷。左手按、颤、揉、滑，尽显柔婉之情。古筝与钢琴协奏的形式充分展现陕西音乐细腻绵长，热耳酸心的特质，抒发了作者对古都长安的万般留恋之情，同时寄托了作者-人虽去，情不尽的情感。
