Filmed at the Great Lakes Outdoor Summit on Friday, October 25, 2024, this engaging conversation revolved climate change and how it is affecting outdoor recreation opportunities. With extreme seasonal variations, climate-driven changes in user preferences, and threats to recreation infrastructure, there are many challenges communities are facing.

In the first half of this session, Kenny Blumenfeld, Senior Climatologist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, explains what science is telling us about climate change in terms of what we’ve observed, and what the “new normal”—if there even is such a thing—may entail in the years and decades to come. The second half of the session will focus on adaptation actions that recreation groups and natural resource managers can take to ensure that outdoor recreation remains sustainable in the face of climate change. Climate Adaptation Specialist Katie Frerker will walk the audience through strategies specific to outdoor recreation that will translate broad concepts into specific, tangible actions.

The Great Lakes Outdoor Summit, curated by the Duluth Area Outdoor Alliance (DAOA), is a gathering of outdoor recreation advocates and adventurers. Drawing hundreds from across the region, the Summit exists to bring nonprofits, land managers, and community members together to help build new collaborative outdoor recreation partnerships. The 2024 Summit was hosted October 24-26 in Duluth, Minnesota and included 12 educational sessions led by industry professionals, an inspiring keynote, exciting adventure field trips, ample networking opportunities, and so much more.
