Recently I posted a quick YouTube short answering the question:

“Is My Sweet Lord easy to play on guitar?”

It’s one of my favorite George Harrison tunes from his monumental album All Things Must Pass. But playing it on guitar, requires a number of skills including:

Bar chords
Diminished chords
Steady groove

It’s trickier than it looks.

The opening two chords are F#m to B. I demonstrated them using bar chords. People commented and said:

“Don’t make things difficult.”

And another…

“Not if you use a capo.”

Yes, you can put a capo on the 2nd fret and make the bar chords F#m and B easier. You can turn them into Em to A. It’s true.

YAY!

But...

What these players probably don’t realize. If they did, I don't think they would be saying this...

You see, partway through the song, something happens...

It modulates up. This means it changes keys.

To play the rest of the song, the entire chord progression must be shifted up 2 frets.

So now, the chords (even with the capo) must be played as bar chords again. I’ve found a lot of people don't play along with recordings, like how I teach my students to do in my programs. But if they did, they would then discover things like this happen in millions of songs. And if you work them out the RIGHT way from the start. It only gets EASIER to change keys. All you have to do is move the chords around the neck. Another great advantage bar chords give you that open chords don't.

Changes keys is easy peasy.

But a lot of guitar players hate and avoid bar chords. However, it doesn't have to be this way.
