Indian Railways has electrified 37,011 km of rail route in the last nine years. According to the official statement released on 4 May 2023, only 21,413 km of rail routes were electrified from the country's independence in 1947 till 2014. Railways said that though there has been a huge jump in the pace of electrification in the country in the last nine years, a record 37,011 km of railway track has been electrified in the last nine years alone. With this, a total of 58,424 kilometer of railway route has been electrified in Indian Railways, which is 90 percent of the total railway route. Indian Railways said that out of the total electrified railway route, about 50 per cent has happened only in the last five years. Indian Railways has set a target of becoming the largest green railway with net zero carbon emissions by 2030. Already 100 percent electrification of railway track has been done in 14 States/Union Territories, which is a strong step of Railways towards achieving the target.
