Two polarized opinions still exist about the 1980 Summer Olympics - some consider it the best Olympics of the 20th century, while others see it as a failure. Which is not surprising - after all, the US and much of the western world boycotted it for political reasons. Nevertheless, more than a thousand Western athletes still came to Moscow, and the USSR was able to successfully hold a grand festival. Today we will talk about three things - why Brezhnev and the KGB were afraid to hold the Olympics in Moscow; who boycotted it and why; and about the main hero of the 1980 Moscow Olympics - its mascot, the Olympic Mishka.
