Join me (Clyde Outside) as I launch from the Harbor Beach pier on Michigan’s Lake Huron shoreline and set out across choppy waters toward two of the Great Lakes’ most fascinating maritime landmarks.

The Harbor Beach Lighthouse and the Dorcas Pendell shipwreck make for a historically significant paddling experience.

This towering, cast-iron beacon has guarded the harbor since 1885, rising 45 feet from the breakwater with a light visible up to 16 nautical miles. It’s a six-deck structure built on a timber crib and stone foundation, originally home to lighthouse keepers who lived, slept, and worked within its narrow walls. Today, it’s maintained by the Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society and open to public tours in summer.

Along the way, I pass a shipwreck just offshore. This shipwreck is one of several resting beneath the surface in this area. The lake bed is the final resting place of thousands of shipwrecks, silent reminders of the lake’s rugged history.

The harbor itself is massive, with nearly 650 acres of protected anchorage, surrounded by nearly 8,000 feet of breakwaters with a 600-foot-wide main entrance. Harbor Beach harbor is recognized as the world’s largest man-made freshwater harbor. This engineering marvel once sheltered over 47,000 ships in a single year during its peak.
