Today we are giving you all the how to's when planning and booking a trip to the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks Race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The Kentucky Derby is the most watched and most attended horse race in the U.S. It's kind of a big deal. And that's why planning your trip way in advance is important.
Louisville is a relatively small city so to be anywhere in the city, you can pay around 5x's normal rate for your hotel.
Next you need to make sure you secure your Kentucky Derby tickets to stay in the club house, box seats or bleachers.
You'll need to signup for the Kentucky Derby and Oaks online pre-sale registration.
You'll get an email in the early fall to fill out a survey, that will give you a chance to be randomly selected to receive an email invite and code for early-November pre-sale, most of which includes tickets to Friday and Saturday for the Oaks and Derby race. Single day tickets go on sale at a later date.
But we recommend the two day package. The fist day, Friday, is the Kentucky Oaks Race. This is the race of the 3 year old fillies (the girl horses). Do not underestimate this day. It does not have the same popularity as the Kentucky Derby but it is a blast! Just like the Derby, Oaks day is all you can eat and drink, including the signature drinks of the two races, the Oak's Lily and the classic mint julep. Oh and on Oaks day, everyone wears pink! Pink is in the decorations, the drinks and the outfits. All to show support and awareness to breast cancer.
The second day on Saturday is the big Kentucky Derby Day. Its more of the same fun, music all you can eat and drink and derby fashion fun. Electricity is in the air and you can feel the excitement build for the big race.
I recommend before leaving for the Derby is Googling some horse race terminology like place, show, superfecta, and odds. A plus side to the derby is you can loose as much or as little money as you'd like, because the minimum bet is around $2.
And lastly you got to plan ahead on what you are going to wear. Men and women young and old go all out and find their inner Southern Bell. There are big bold stripes, busy plaids, pastels, giant hats, all steal the show. Just remember to wear comfortable shoes. It is a long two days and there is a lot of walking.

The Kentucky Derby should be on everyone's bucket list. Plan ahead! I already started looking for my next Derby Hat!
