This is my drum solo from my Ken Loomer Big Band concert. When doing this type of an open drum solo made famous by drummers like Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Billy Cobham, Sonny Payne, Gene Krupa, and John Bonham to name a few, I use all of my advance drum technique that I have learned to produce a dynamic and exciting performance. So important to have great sounding drums to do this type of solo. I`m using my 1970 Slingerland BR model kit with the big 14x24 inch bass drum, 9x13 tom, two 16x16 floor toms, and a 5.5x14 snare drum. All drums have that wide open natural sound with no muffling. It`s really a small basic drum set up. With good left hand technique and fast single pedal bass drum control, I just use my hands and feet to play what I`m thinking. I never play what I practice. I want to express my self in new ways in this Buddy Rich style drum solo which is always exciting to do. I want to use dynamic`s, crossovers, rolls, fast singles with accents, cymbal solo playing, left hand technique and feel to have a dynamic type solo. I will add a touch of humor also ,and then have a killer ending. Playing with a powerful and exciting Big Band brings up the energy level in my drum playing. This old school style of drumming is still very hard to do, but so wonderful to play if you work on it. I think old is new again when the people can see and hear it live for the first time.
