Efforts to reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases must be based on understanding of the wide disparities that exist in incidence, course, responsiveness to population-based as well as individual interventions and, ultimately, outcomes. The important variables include individual biological factors and a wide range of physical and social environmental forces. Research in recent years has characterized many of the mechanisms and interactions involved and has begun to provide a more syncytial model of disease dynamics.

Lecturers, both leading contributors to these advances in disparities research, will be Ichiro Kawachi, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health, and Bruce Link, PhD, Professor of Epidemiology, Sociomedical Sciences, and Psychiatry at the Mailman School of Public Health.
