Beverly Hills is a city located in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is a well-known, affluent residential area with high-end shopping and luxury hotels. The area was first settled by the Tongva people, who were later displaced by Spanish explorers and missionaries in the 18th century.
The city's name derives from the Beverly Farms area of Beverly, Massachusetts, where early landowners had connections to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The city was founded by a group of investors led by Burton Green, who purchased a ranch in the area in 1900. The investors intended to create a "new city" with wide, tree-lined streets, large lots, and elegant homes. The development of Beverly Hills began in earnest in the 1920s, with the construction of many of the city's iconic buildings, including the Beverly Hills Hotel and the City Hall.
