I visited Sasebo, the birthplace of the hamburger in Japan. It's also known for having a huge US navy base since after WW2, which explains the reason why burgers became so popular there.

The journey was easy, a direct express train from Hakata Station in Fukuoka to Sasebo Station. My hotel in Fukuoka was right next to Hakata Station and my hotel in Sasebo was just one street away from Sasebo Station.

There's always hotels near the big railway stations in Japan, and it makes it convenient when travelling around Japan by train.

I stayed at Washington Hotel Sasebo, which is a 'business hotel'. Japanese business hotels are no-frills and budget-friendly. They're mainly designed for salarymen and solo travelers who need a clean, convenient place to sleep, with all the essentials there. It was only $57 USD per night, which I think is really good value in Japan.

My first mission in Sasebo, the burger capital of Japan, was of course to get myself a Sasebo Burger. I visited the original 'Big Man' shop that opened 55 years ago and ordered their Big Man Burger.

The size and thickness of the smokey bacon was massive. I think the bacon was as thick as the actual beef patty. It was incredibly delicious and it's clear to see why this shop has been popular for over half a century. They've even opened up other branches in Sasebo.

Another popular local food I tried were the Cream Puffs at Ganseki Bakery. They are like choux pastries that are absolutely stuffed with sweet custard. The pastry is so thin, so it's all filling that you're eating. Yum yum!

Full of energy I decided it would be a good idea to hike up the nearest mountain and enjoy the sunset. But it turned out to be a bad idea, as I couldn't possibly reach the peak before it got dark. The views on the way up were incredible though.

The next day I did a bit more of a relaxing sightseeing adventure, taking a cruise around Kujukushima (The 99 Islands). These are the islands that you see in the opening shots of the 2003 movie The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise.

There's actually more than 200 islands in Kujukushima, but "Kujuku" or "99" in Japanese tends to just mean "a lot".

Back in Sasebo city centre, I tried another famous local burger shop called Log Kit. This time I couldn't visit the original restaurant because it closes early, so I went to a small branch that they have at the train station.

This one was extremely juicy, and again, super tasty. Any burger shop that got so popular they had to open up other branches in the city must be good.

For dessert I tried the Choco Mint drink from the frozen section at Family Mart. Choco Mint products are very popular in Japan during the scorching hot summer time.

And I went back to Ganseki Bakery to try the seasonal variety of their Cream Puff, with peach filling. Peach is also a very popular summertime food in Japan.

Again, full of energy, I attempted to hike up that mountain for a nice sunset view. This time I learned my lesson and left half an hour earlier, giving me that extra half hour of daylight that I really needed.

A surprise at the top was some historical place where the Japanese army had anti-aircraft guns during WW2. I didn't expect that, so it was a nice bonus in addition to enjoying a spectacular view of Sasebo.
