Insect-Inspired Bionic Eye That Can See & Smell | Future Robot Vision System

Scientists have developed a breakthrough insect-scale bionic compound eye that allows robots and drones to both see and detect hazardous gases at the same time. Inspired by the fruit fly’s compound eye, this next-gen sensor system delivers ultra-wide vision and multi-sense detection for smarter autonomous navigation.

Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences created a micro compound eye using advanced femtosecond laser two-photon polymerization (FL-TPP).

The tiny structure packs over 1,000 visual units into a 1.5 mm area, along with micro hair structures to resist humidity. A printed chemical sensor layer acts like a bionic nose, helping robots detect dangerous gases while tracking motion and avoiding obstacles with a 180-degree field of view.

Tested on a miniature robot, the system successfully detected moving targets, sensed nearby obstacles, and identified hazardous gases showing strong potential for drone navigation, disaster response, chemical leak detection, and bionic robotics.

While current limitations include lower image resolution and slight visual distortion, future refinements could make this bio-inspired eye a powerful tool for intelligent unmanned systems.
