This video features the tenor recitative and aria from BWV 7 by Johann Sebastian Bach — a cantata written for the Feast of St. John the Baptist. Through vivid numerology and musical symbolism, Bach depicts Christ’s baptism in the River Jordan and the manifestation of the Holy Trinity. The writing for two violins and tenor forms a radiant musical triad, underscoring themes of purification, rebirth, and spiritual renewal.

This aria plays a special role within BACH 52. It first appeared in Episode 1, where it served as the musical point of departure for the series. It returns in Episode 14, filmed live at Tanglewood, where Nicholas Phan and Chad Smith discuss Bach, classical music’s place in contemporary culture, and concert-making as ritual.
