Major Hurricane Iota has now become a Category 5 Hurricane based off of the latest NHC Advisory and from Reconnaissance Data and is on pace to make a catastrophic landfall in Nicaragua in under 10 hours. Iota will be the second major hurricane landfall in the Nicaragua in 2 weeks, and is the latest category 5 on record in the Atlantic basin.

Iota currently has a projected CDPS is a stage 9 for its landfall location in Nicaragua. However, wind and rainfall parameters are dangerously close to pushing Iota into Stage 10 territory and may or may not happen depending on what Iota does between the time of this update and landfall which slated to occur in the evening to overnight hours. Rainfall as much as 950 millimeters and deadly storm surge up to nearly 6 meters is possible along the Nicaraguan coast. It is not something we say lightly but this is a very dangerous and life threatening situation
