Eczema is one of most common skin condition for which patient reaches to dermatologist. In this condition skin becomes red, dry, itchy, and irritated. It can occur in any age from kids to elderly people. However it is very common in children and young adults.

Exact reason for this condition is not known in medical field however it can occur because of combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is more commonly seen in people with allergy asthma or in those people wear family history is also positive.

Symptoms of eczema Intense itching, redness, dryness of skin. In severe cases oozing of the skin may also occur. In long standing cases, the skin may thick due to repeated scratching.

This condition usually effects face, hands, elbows, knees, and scalp.

Diagnosis

Easily done by clinical examination and medical history. Very rarely it may need allergy tests or skin patch test.

Treatment is too give relief from symptoms and preventing recurrence. Moisturizing the skin regularly is mainstay of treatment. To reduce inflammation topical sterois are sometimes given. Antihistamines are given to control itching. In more severe cases, phototherapy or systemic medications can help. Avoiding triggers such as harsh soaps and stress can also help manage the condition.
