STORYLINE:
A Leon County judge sentenced a Broward periodontist to life in prison without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder on Tuesday in Tallahassee.

Before the sentencing, Charlie Adelson said he was innocent. He will have 30 days to appeal his sentence, the judge said.

Adelson, of Fort Lauderdale, was the fourth defendant to be convicted in the 2014 execution-style murder of Florida State University professor Daniel Markel, Adelson’s former brother-in-law.

Adelson was convicted of arranging Markel's shooting through a girlfriend, Katie Magbanua. She employed her ex-boyfriend and his friend, the latter a member of the notorious Latin Kings gang, to murder Markel, 41.

Magbanua and her ex-boyfriend, Sigfredo Garcia, are serving life sentences after being convicted earlier of first-degree murder. His friend, Luis Rivera, is serving a 19-year sentence after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and testifying against the others.

A jury sided with the prosecutors who accused Adelson of being the mastermind of a murder-for-hire plot during a child custody dispute and found him guilty on Nov. 6 of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and solicitation to commit first-degree murder.
