Esta clássica canção perpassa toda a história dos movimentos recentes de resistência e libertação nacional da Indonésia. Sendo cantada em primeiro momento contra a ocupação nipônica da Indonésia e a escassez de alimentos que marcou este período. Quando Arief se junta ao LEKRA(Lembaga Kebudajaan Rakjat(Instituto de Cultura Popular)), organização associada ao PKI(Partai Komunis Indonesia(Partido Comunista Indonésio)) a musica ganha um novo significado. Neste período passa a ser cantada principalmente pelo Movimento Gerwani, movimento feminista que lutava por melhores condições de vida, libertação do gênero feminino, contra a corrupção, etc.

Com o golpe de Estado promovido por Suharto, o Movimento Gerwani, assim como a canção Genjer Genjer foram banidos da Indonésia, o que persistiu por toda a ditadura sanguinária de Suharto.

Atualmente o PKI é ilegal e a canção Genjer Genjer é recitada em um misto de nostalgia e esperança para que um dia o povo indonésio seja livre!

This classic song permeates the entire history of recent movements of resistance and national liberation of Indonesia. When Arief joined LEKRA(Lembaga Kebudajaan Rakjat(Institute of People's Culture)), organization associated to PKI((Partai Komunis Indonesia)Indonesian Communist Party)the music gained new meaning in society. At that time, the song was mainly sung by Gerwani, a feminist movement that fought for better living conditions, liberation of the female gender, getting rid of corruption, and so on.

With the coup d' etat promoted by Suharto, Gerwani Movement and the Genjer- Genjer song were banned in Indonesia, which persisted throughout the bloody dictatorship of Suharto.

Currently, the PKI is illegal, and Genjer- Genjer song is recited in a mixture of nostalgia and hope that one day the Indonesian people to be free!
