Описание к видео S'pore's trains usually run fine, so why do we freak out over breakdowns? | The Usual Place podcast

Singapore’s MRT system is among the most reliable in the world, but a recent spate of breakdowns has left commuters frustrated and questioning whether enough is being done.

On this episode of The Usual Place, host Natasha Ann Zachariah speaks with former ST senior transport correspondent Christopher Tan and Dr Samuel Chng, a research assistant professor who heads the Urban Psychology Lab in the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, about why train disruptions feel so disruptive, and what can realistically be done in the short term.

While most journeys are smooth, even a single incident can ripple across entire lines, delaying thousands of commuters at once. Social media amplifies the frustration, spreading news of every fault instantly, regardless of who is actually affected.

The experts argue that perspective matters. Minor disruptions may not impact many, while smaller glitches at the wrong time or place can feel catastrophic. But as ridership continues to rise, the stakes are higher than ever.
