Here’s a great historical film from the Information Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Food & Agriculture featuring several Leamington area tomato and cucumber growers, packing operations, the Ontario Food Terminal, Research and technology in 1971. Hydroponic production didn’t exist and there was so much manual labour. It’s nice to see a growers and packers that A.M.A. does business with today. Enjoy a piece of greenhouse history.

By the way, A.M.A.’s founder, Allen Monsma was already in the industry by 1971, having been a labourer, as a new immigrant, a greenhouse owner and grower (cut chrysanthemums in Amherstburg, ON) , then a fertilizer supplier. A.M.A.’s Connie Bradt was a toddler, the first time she was in her parent’s greenhouses and helped to plant as she grew a little older. A.M.A.’s Rick Bradt, had been playing from about age 6, in the boiler room and freshly tilled and steamed soil in the greenhouses across the street from where he grew up in Leamington, owned by the older brother of one of today’s most well-known Leamington vegetable marketers. At A.M.A., the greenhouse industry is in our blood.
