In the 2007 GTI Mark V I just bought, there was a problem with the floor mat moving around. What's happening is that one of the carpet retaining clips was missing the rotating locking tab. And without it, the floor mat kept shifting around on the floor and riding up over the gas pedal. The clips in the floor were actually all fine except for the one missing locking tab.

So I found some replacement carpet clips online to help me fix this. And you'll find the part number here in the description to help you find these. I got a set of 4 genuine Volkswagen floor mat retaining clips. You can change everything out with these or just use part of them as I'm about to show you in this video.

These retaining clips consist of two parts. The bottom part screws into the floor of the car and the top part rotates to lock the floor mat into place. To fix my loose mat, all I needed is the top rotating tab which is removable. Here's how I did it. I used a pair of thin needle nose pliers and compressed the pressure tabs in the center to help pop out the top part. A screwdriver carefully wedged in there also helps!

Once the top rotating tab is out all I have to do is snap it into the existing retaining clip that was missing this part. And because this is a genuine VW part, it snaps right in. This should work just like new again.

So replacing just part of the carpet retaining clip totally worked and now the floor mat in my GTI stays in place no problem. These clips should work in other VW and Audi models as well. This is definitely an easy DIY project that only takes a few minutes to do.
