Cytomegalovirus, or CMV, is the most common non-genetic cause of childhood deafness in the country. CMV can also bring blindness, cognitive delays and microcephaly, and it is vastly more common than the Zika virus, which prompted alarm this summer for its potential to cause birth defects. But, while Congress invested $1.1 billion in fighting Zika, funding for CMV lags behind. A Wheat Ridge mother is trying to raise awareness about CMV, which is an easily spread virus that is present in nearly every elementary school and daycare center in the country.
