NetSuite Landed Cost management tracks the true cost of inventory by including expenses like shipping, handling, insurance, and customs fees. This feature ensures accurate inventory valuation and cost of goods sold reporting by capturing all costs associated with getting products to your warehouse.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀?
The actual cost of inventory isn't just what you pay the supplier. It includes freight charges, insurance premiums, handling fees, customs duties, and storage costs during transit. Without tracking these expenses, your inventory valuation is incomplete and your profit margins are inaccurate.

𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗦𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:

𝗘𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Navigate to Setup → Company → Enable Features → Landed Cost and activate the functionality.

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲: Go to Customization → SuiteBundler → Search & Install Bundles and install Bundle ID 47193.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀: Enable the "Estimated Landed Cost" checkbox in role permissions for users who will work with landed costs.

𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀: Configure whether to include landed costs in last purchase price and enable landed cost allocation per line if needed.

𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗽 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀:
Create cost categories for each type of landed cost expense. Navigate to Setup → Accounting → Accounting Lists and set Type to Cost Category. Set Cost Type to Landed and select the appropriate expense account. Best practice: Create both an expense account and an expense contra account for each landed cost category. Using "Landed Cost" in category names makes them easy to identify when creating templates.

𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀:

Templates allow NetSuite to calculate landed costs automatically. Go to Lists → Accounting → Landed Cost Templates and create new templates specifying currency, categories, cost allocation method (by quantity, weight, value, etc.), and cost factors. Different allocation methods distribute costs differently across items, so choose the method that best reflects your business reality.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 - 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:

𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟭 - 𝗣𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘁𝗮𝗯): Enter estimated or actual amounts for each cost category at the transaction level. Select one allocation method for the entire receipt. Choose between manual entry, linking to vendor bills, or excluding taxes from linked bills.

𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟮 - 𝗣𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝘁𝗲𝗺 (𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆): Click the coins icon on individual line items to enter specific landed cost amounts for each item separately. Provides maximum granularity but requires more data entry effort.

𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟯 - 𝗣𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝘁𝗲𝗺 (𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀): Check "Calculate Landed Costs" on line items to use the default template. NetSuite automatically calculates estimated costs based on the template's allocation method and cost factors.

𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀:
When you receive bills from freight companies or other service providers, create vendor bills using Other Charge items. Set up Other Charge items matching your landed cost categories. Select the appropriate landed cost category on each bill line. The memo field is critical as it identifies the bill when linking to item receipts.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝗽𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀:

➞ Update Item Receipt Method: Return to the original item receipt and link the vendor bill in the Landed Cost subtab. NetSuite automatically updates the currency amounts and adjusts COGS on fulfilled items.

➞ Leave Separate Method: If the estimated amount on the receipt matches the actual vendor bill amount, the debit and credit automatically offset. Any variance appears in the expense section of your income statement. This keeps Net Income accurate but may show Gross Profit variance.

𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁:
When you save an item receipt with landed costs, NetSuite credits the expense contra account and debits the inventory asset account. When you enter the vendor bill, it debits the expense account. If amounts match, they net to zero. If there's a variance, it appears on your profit and loss statement.
