The American F-104 "Starfighter" was a supersonic fighter jet that was in service within the German Air Force from 1960 to 1991. Due to the many crashes of this aircraft type it was nicknamed "Witwenmacher" ('widowmaker') and "fliegender Sarg" ('flying coffin').
Ecki Südmeyer was a German singer and songwriter who also served in the West German Luftwaffe ('air force'). In 1982 he survived the crash of his F-104G. In 1992 he died during another airplane crash, together with Johannes Asanger who himself survived the crash of his "Tornado" in 1991.
