Henrico County, Shamin Hotels and others held a April 25 ground-breaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction that will put two hotels and two restaurants within a short walk of the Henrico Sports & Events Center.

Shamin Hotels is developing a Residence Inn and Suites hotel, which eventually will be joined by a Home2 Suites hotel and two not-yet-announced restaurants. The 185,000-square-foot Sports & Events Center opened in October and attracted about 112,000 visitors in its first few months. That equates to an estimated economic impact of $14.9 million, according to the Henrico Sports & Entertainment Authority.

In 2022, tourism accounted for $1.7 billion in economic activity in Henrico – the fifth highest total among localities in the state, according to a study by Virginia Tourism Corp. That translated to about $75 million in local revenue and 10,000 jobs.
