Whittier Alaska, is not quite like any other place I have visited in my life. In fact, my life paths have now crossed in Whittier Alaska. My last contract working on cruise ships ended here, before a re-position to Panama, but I spent many turn-around days exploring the buildings of this abandoned Cold War Base. When the Pandemic hit, that was the end of my life onboard cruise ships, but it was by no means the end of my adventures. It has taken me nearly three years to get back here, but I am back and I am able to explore this area better than ever.
Though this adventures destination is Whittier, the road did not start here. Leaving from Dawson City, I was blessed with a beautiful passage over the Top of the World Highway. This is a route that I have been almost equally as nervous for as I have been excited. Few places in the world can you take a motorhome into the alpine, but it of course comes with some risks and challenges. This route contains several hundred kilometres of rough dirt road, and with that comes the risk of breakdowns and damage, especially to a motorhome. I am well aware of, and prepared, for these risks before entering into any passage, but this time they got the best of me. A bad brake failure was unexpected, and lead to a substantial repair, but it was again a repair I could handle.
Passing through Anchorage, and into Whittier, I got to finally pass through the famous train tunnel, crossing one more item off my list, but on the other side, I was not greeted with sunshine. In fact, I was greeted by seven days of horrendous weather, a boat full of water and a broken boat trailer. These are not fun things to deal with, but they did not deter me from my adventure, and on day eight, I got to embark on it. Whittier is famous for its Cold War history, but it is also well known for its proximity to glaciers. I have filmed many of these glaciers during my time on ships, but to do it on my own was a massive goal, and I am so proud to check it off the list. It was a big risk taking my boat out on the frigid waters to the glaciers, but once again it paid off tenfold.
