At 79 East 10th Street, Helen Frankenthaler redefined abstract painting, subletting a studio in the building in 1951. As a major contributor to the history of postwar American art, Frankenthaler was active for nearly six decades, encompassing many phases and stylistic shifts, and has long been recognized as one of the great American artists of the twentieth century. In the immediate post-war years, East 10th Street was a haven for painters and sculptors, many of them women.
