The Bavona Valley is one of the wildest valleys in the Swiss Alps. Located in the Swiss southern region of Ticino, it has remained frozen in the 16th century. The valley is only inhabited in summertime and has opted to remain true to its rustic roots, even shunning electricity.

I hiked between the villages of Foroglio and Gerra.

I started with the spectacular Foroglio waterfall. The Calnegia river plummets from 110 m. Then we hiked up along the river to explore the valley before the drop.

After continuing through the Foroglio village, we reached the village of Puntid.

The name for a traditional Bavona Valley home is a rustico. Made of stacked stones (often without mortar), they were often built three stories high to conserve heat and save land. Some date from the 15th century, and have been passed down through generations.

After crossing the village of Puntid and its stone bridge, the trail reaches Gerra, 'gèra' in fact means gravel in the local dialect.

We can see farmsteads, composed of constructions under rock, "splüi" in the local dialect (from the Latin "spelunca", cave, cavern). These spaces were used as living quarters, cowsheds, cellars, storage rooms, woodsheds, and so on.
